Effective use of an oral appliance is linked to correct use and regular care. The information below is general; personal instructions are given by the dentist.

Use
The appliance is used as and for the time the dentist recommends. There may be a short adjustment period at first; adaptation generally increases over time.
Cleaning and storage
General suggestions:
- Cleaning the appliance regularly with suitable methods
- Avoiding very hot water
- Storing it dry and in suitable conditions
Follow-up
The fit and effectiveness of the appliance are assessed with regular check-ups. If there is discomfort or anything unexpected, see the dentist.
Frequently asked questions
Does the appliance cause pain?
There may be mild signs of adjustment at first; if they persist, consult the dentist.
How often are check-ups needed?
The frequency of check-ups is set by the dentist.
How long does an appliance last?
It varies with use and care; renewal may be considered if it wears out.
The first nights
Mild pressure around the jaw and teeth, increased saliva or a short-lived change in the bite on waking are common when starting with an oral appliance, and usually settle. A bite change that lasts, jaw pain or clicking and locking of the joint should prompt you to pause use and contact the clinic.
Daily cleaning
The appliance should be rinsed and brushed after each use. Hot water can distort it. Cleaning solutions recommended by your dentist can be used periodically, and the appliance should be stored dry in a ventilated case.
- Rinsing and brushing each morning
- Avoiding hot water
- Periodic care with recommended solutions
- Storing dry, in its case
Reviews and assessing effectiveness
At review appointments the fit of the appliance, any changes to the teeth and jaw joint and the change in symptoms are assessed, and adjustments made where needed. Effectiveness is judged clinically and, where indicated, with a repeat sleep study.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an appliance last?
This varies with the material, clenching habits and care. Wear, cracks or a loss of fit mean it should be assessed.
How should I travel with it?
Carry it dry in its ventilated case and avoid leaving it in high temperatures.
