A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once it integrates with the bone, it supports a crown, bridge or denture that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth.

Healing after dental implants
The fusion between the implant and the jawbone, called osseointegration, is a biological process that usually takes a few months. During this period, keeping the area clean and following the dietary and hygiene instructions given by your dentist supports healing. The timeline varies with the treated site, bone density, gum health and individual healing. Review appointments allow us to check that healing is progressing as expected.
When bone volume is insufficient
When a tooth has been missing for a long time, the bone in that area can lose volume. In such cases, additional procedures such as bone grafting or a sinus lift may be discussed before dental implants are placed. Whether these steps are needed is determined by CBCT (3D) imaging and clinical examination, and the treatment plan is prepared accordingly.
Long-term care
The tissues around an implant require the same daily attention as natural teeth. Brushing, interdental brushes or floss, and periodic check-ups all help reduce the risk of inflammation around the implant. Smoking and uncontrolled systemic conditions may negatively affect both healing and long-term outcomes, so please share your medical history with your dentist.

How long does implant treatment take?
The total time depends on the case. Placement itself is usually a short appointment; the healing period is the main factor. In suitable cases a temporary restoration may be planned earlier, while the final restoration is made after healing.
Is the procedure painful?
The surgical step is carried out under local anaesthesia, so pain is not expected during treatment. Mild swelling, bruising or tenderness may follow and is managed with your dentist’s advice.
Does smoking affect dental implants?
Smoking is among the factors that can negatively influence tissue healing and bone integration. It is best discussed openly during planning.
What can be placed on an implant?
A crown for a single tooth, a bridge for several teeth, or a fixed or removable denture for a full arch may be considered, depending on clinical assessment.
What determines how long an implant lasts?
Oral hygiene, regular check-ups, clenching habits and general health are the main factors. No individual guarantee of duration can be given.
