Zirconia or E-max: how is the choice made?
The position of the tooth, the chewing load it carries and the aesthetic expectation are considered together. Zirconia, because of its strength, is often considered for posterior teeth and bridges. E-max (lithium disilicate glass ceramic) transmits light well and may be preferred for single restorations in the front of the mouth. The final choice is made by your dentist after examination and records.
Care and longevity
Teeth restored with crowns can still develop decay at the margins and gum disease, so daily brushing, interdental cleaning and regular check-ups remain important. A night guard may be recommended for patients who clench or grind. Avoiding biting very hard objects helps protect the restorations. Longevity varies with hygiene, bite relationships and habits.
How treatment progresses
Treatment usually involves examination, preparation of the tooth, a digital scan or conventional impression, a laboratory stage and a try-in. A temporary restoration may be used in between. Shade is selected with your natural teeth as a reference, and fit, bite and appearance are checked before final cementation.

Frequently asked questions
Do zirconia crowns discolour over time?
Porcelain surfaces resist external staining better than natural enamel. However, deposits at the gum margin and colour changes in adjacent natural teeth can affect the overall appearance.
Will I have sensitivity afterwards?
Temporary sensitivity after preparation is common and usually settles. Persistent symptoms should be assessed by your dentist.
Can metal-free crowns cause allergy?
Zirconia and glass ceramics are biocompatible materials. If you have a known allergy history, please share it before treatment.
Can a crown fracture?
Excessive chewing force, clenching or trauma can damage a crown. A protective night guard may be considered to reduce this risk.
What if the gum recedes?
Changes in gum level can expose the crown margin. Regular check-ups allow this to be noticed and managed early.
